PIXEY TALKS NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEKENDER 2022

In March 2021, Pixey’s Free To Live In Colour EP was awarded a perfect 5-star review from Dork (“indie pop bop perfection”), and 4-stars from both NME (“cosmic pop masterclass with Scouse soul”) and DIY (“a sparky new pop personality”). In the weeks leading up to the EP’s release, Pixey was featured as a DIY Neu artist, in Dork’s HYPE section, as Notion’s Internet Crush, The Sunday Times’ Breaking Act, The Daily Star’s Rising Star, and was even featured in her beloved Liverpool FC’s official matchday programme. Pixey also featured as the cover star of Liverpool’s Bido Lito! magazine.

Single ‘Just Move’ drew attention from BBC Radio 1 DJs Jack Saunders (who made Pixey one of his Next Wave artists) and Huw Stephens amongst many other admirers like Radio X’s John Kennedy who added Pixey to the X-Posure playlist at the station in October 2020.

Today, Pixey releases her new EP, Sunshine State, cementing her as one of the most exciting newcomers around.

How’s it been getting to finally play some live shows?

It’s been nuts. It’s so surreal to play songs live that I wrote in lockdown for the first time with a brand new band setup – the first show was so overwhelming but so amazing. I still don’t think I’ve got my head around gigs being back.

With the temperature dropping recently, does having festivals in the diary give you that hope, and something to look forward to in the summer?

I live for the summertime, so having gigs booked for next summer is so motivating. It will be my first proper festival season as a performer so I can’t tell you how excited I am to play next year.

What can people expect from your set?

Breakbeats, big riffs and a bit of dancing!

Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington is close to your hometown, does it make it more special knowing they’ll be some fellow Liverpudlians watching?

Always! It’s so calming and I always ask if there’s and Liverpudlians in the crowd. I recently had some Liverpool FC fans in a crowd who were chanting while I was on stage – felt like I was at Anfield.

Who else are you looking forward to watching over the weekend?

I can’t wait to watch Inhaler and Wet Leg. I’ve also always wanted to watch Kasabian live so I’ll finally get to live out that dream!

What’s your favourite track from the forthcoming EP?

My favourite is ‘Day Dreaming’. I think it’s a bit of a dark horse. It was one of my favourite ones to write, I played it live for the first time last week and it reaffirmed my love for the track.

Is there a particular song you enjoy playing live?

I love playing ‘Electric Dream’ live. It’s definitely my favourite and my band’s favourite to play live too. It sounds exactly how I always envisioned it in my head, and so fun to dance to on stage.

I noticed your Twitter bio says you’re ‘the indie Britney Spears’, would you ever cover a Britney song live? Maybe Neighbourhood could be your chance to do that if not!

Britney was a childhood icon of mine so I think I’d be super nervous about not doing the song the justice it deserves live, but if I was going to perform one it would have to be ‘…Baby One More Time’. Maybe I will actually whip that one out at my Neighbourhood set and live out my childhood dream.
